About Mr. Eka Tjipta Widjaja

Mr. Eka Tjipta Widjaja was an entrepreneur, philanthropist and educator. Hewas born in Quanzhou, Fujian Province in 1922. Quanzhou  is one of the major hometowns of many overseas Chinese. There are more than 9.5 million overseas Chinese in more than 170 countries and regions around the world. Descendants of these overseas Chinese of Quanzhou have also created amazing wealth for the world through their ragged and tremendous efforts. They posess a strong entrepreneurial spirit and an admirable legacy inherited from their ancestors and hometown.

As a young child, Mr. Widjaja migrated with his parents and siblings to Indonesia. Life was quite difficult and he had to quit school to make a living to support the family as the eldest child. He started as a street vendor selling goodies and household needs during the economic turmoil. With all the ups and downs, he was able to maintain his momentum and came out of difficult times and finally build Sinarmas Group.

As a successful entrepreneur, he spent quite amount of his wealth and time on philanthropy as a strong commitment to his social responsibility. Because he had to help his family at a young age, he missed the opportunity for highschool education and on. His particularly paid a lot of attention to his children’s education and children from underprivileged families. 

His benevolent footprints covered a wide range of philanthropic areas, such as eradication of poverty, social entrepreneurial support, equilibrium of education, supporting medical facilities, scientific researches and many more. Millions of people have been benefited by his benevolence.

Eka Tjipta Widjaja’s life is a legend in his hometown – Quanzhou, China. His diligence and persistence will forever shine on future generations. His philanthropic spirit is continued by his children, grandchildren as well as the entire family members. This Foundation is set up by his grandson and grand daughter-in-law in 2010 to keep supporting philanthropic causes that are in need.

What Mr. Widjaja brought us is not the flash of the moment, but the eternal memory!
